Currently I am running an Xcilo StablePower 1000. 1000W without even getting warm! Underrated by quite a bit! 100% Rubycon (of a good size) in mine
It powers eight IDE hard drives (IDE PCI cards FTW), two DVD burners, a Core 2 Duo CPU, not to mention a Sapphire ATI Radeon HD 4650 (AGP) graphics card. It was not cheap but was well worth the money I spent on it.
The only thing you need to be careful of with the larger power supplies such as that, is most of them have a minimum rated load for the current regulation to work properly.
You probably have enough hardware that it should be fine in your case. That one should last you a good few years!
Great video! Very informative. I have one of those Dell models that they had the problem with bad caps (Optiplex GX-280.) Mine seems to be fine though. These models also have a problem with the CPU fan spinning up to high speed and staying there. It sounds like a jet taking off. I use a program called 18kfanGUI (which is designed for Dell laptops) to slow it down some. Other than that this computer is running great!
Emachines used Bestek power supplies for several years.. another reason to stay away from those cheap machines.
My local computer dealer still sells a lot of Sparkle and Tiger power supplies and I’ve bought a few. My main rig uses a 500 w Antec.
Ya, I forgot to mention Emachines in my video. They were one of the most affected by Bestec.
Antec was also hit by bad caps a few years ago. I have a Truepower 550 in my work machine that I had to rebuild because of bad Fuhjyyu caps. They are nice quality besides the poor choice of caps.
i would have liked to see an example of a good off the shelf power supply. we had a 9 month old emachines and the mother board went out probably related to the power supply. i guess there was a good reason it was $299 for the whole thing
I will be doing another video soon with some more examples. Also watch the video response area, since I’m adding a link to a video I made a while back about a high end power supply.
Emachines was another manufacturer that was hit with lots of bad power supplies and capacitors. The sad thing is, a lot of companies are using really cheap parts now. That is why I prefer to build my own systems from scratch, despite the generally higher price.
I can remember we got an “Emachine” BRAND NEW at Best Buy around 2006 to use as an audio playback computer and it has been through several power supplies and finally gave up the ghost due to bad capacitors on the motherboard.
That’s a great video…I have heard of something like what you said when voltage regulation was lost happening in DVD players where everything ended up getting destroyed by excessive, unregulated voltage.
Yep, that’s usually how they go. I’ve rebuilt a couple Emachines myself. They are probably some of the cheapest I’ve worked on.
Very true. If I need a new PC I will always build from scratch now – bad experience… let’s just say… Dell + Crap PSU…. *BOOM* Hard drive, DVD drive, the whole thing including keyboard and mouse…. nuked
ha nuke
Just curious, what do you think of PC Power & Cooling? I have a 750 watt Silencer in my Falcon Northwest built machine (the PC is about 5 years old now, but still works well and the PSU is about 2 years old). The Silencer seems to be a good unit, it’s been on pretty steadily since I installed it.
I have never used one myself, but I’ve never heard anything bad about them. They are supposedly pretty close to server-grade when compared to cheaper ones.
Harddrives and optical drives hardly use any power at all. Typically about 5-7 watts per device. Your real heavy power consumption comes from modern CPUs and video cards. However, the 4650 draws less than 75 watts at full load. I’d say a 1000w PSU is rather overkill for your system.
I’m running a Core 2 Quad with a GTX 260, and I’ve got a 500w PSU that has no problems powering my system. ATI’s own recommendation is a 400w PSU for the 4650.
Very true – The reason I use a 1000 watt PSU is that I reflashed an old Apple graphics card (GeForce 4 AGP) so I could use my 21 inch Apple CRT which is powered through ADC – the monitor draws around five amps. When I used it with my G4, the PSU would shut off when I used the G4 with the monitor on at the same time as using FireWire (bus powered) hard drives. I like it really as I know that I will be able to upgrade my box without upgrading the PSU
It’s lasted me years so far!
shit…..
my HKC 400 watt power supply looks a LOT like that codegen. same fan, same transformer, same heatsink, same casing….
my compaq presario has a Bestec power supply. it still runs fine tho.
