if a laptop power supply is dead can it run just on battery or just cord?
Also is there any other ways to tell if the power supply is dead on a laptop? One computer here will light up but not power up so I am trying to figure out what’s up. the computer is a good 5 years old.

If you get a power light the laptop is getting power from somewhere. Provided the battery/power board in the laptop is functional there’s life. It maybe your 5 year old is stuck in standby. Press and hold the power button for 6 seconds.
You can run your laptop on battery.
But what will you do if you drain the battery?
I think you must get a power supply.
Though your computer is too old to buy a charger,

The website says it fit many laptop model, look at the list.
If there are your laptop model, I think you must order it.
The laptop power adapter converts U.S. 110 volts AC to the 19 – 24 volts DC needed for the computer to operate.
If the battery is charged a laptop can run using only the battery for a while.
If you have a volt meter you can measure the output voltage of the laptops power adapter and see what voltage you are getting. (look for on adapter for the output voltage you should be getting.) You can also see if the green light on on the power adapter is on, that will not guarantee it is working but it will show that it probably is.
