The “random hole” is for the ipad with 3g. Cause thats where you put in the sim card.

The cutout is not for the SIM card. Don’t listen to the haters. I’ve gotten another case with the same cutout and thought it was for the SIM card too but after speaking to the manufacturer I learned that they put the cutout there to assist you in removing the case from your iPad. And I love these cases!
