This tutorial shows you how to turn your old computer power supply in to a power supply that can provide enough power for your Turnigy charger or any battery charger that accepts a 12 volt input and requires less than about 10 amps. Excellent video, dude. I’m planning on doing this just this weekend. Quick question though: once the system is one, we are to get our + and – leads.
When we choose two wires, say a yellow and a neighboring black one, it’ll be at 12 Volts. At that voltage, mine is rated for 17 Amps. But in order to get all 17 Amps, should we bundle all the yellow wires together and attach it to a lead,and then all black to the other lead?
I suppose I’m asking: Do I get the 12 V/17 A from each wire, or all?

If the car stereo uses less amperage than about 100w, then yes. But please pay attention to polarity. Yellow is positive, and black is negative. If you get them wrong, you will ruin your stereo.
Please pay attention to the heat on the wires. If the wires get hot, then disconnect the stereo. This means the wires are too small to provide the power the stereo is requesting. If all you want to do is power the head unit, this shouldn’t be a problem. Do not try to power speakers!!
No idea. I wouldn’t even want to comment on that other than 12v will not be enough voltage to break the skin. You will need over 60v to give an electric shock to a person.

Hey, just to follow up, I have the exact same charger and have got it to power up and charge some batteries with a 12v 19a 300w computer power supply. However it reads the input voltage to be less than 11 volts (10.3-10.7). Also it gives off that hot electronics smell.. when it was done charging instead of beeping at me it just shut off.
I am wondering how low your power supply voltage drops while charging at full capacity of the little charger? And if you have experienced similar problems. My guess is this power supply won’t work with the 8c turnigy at 150w? Before this I’ve been using the hobbyco 14v 10a power supply.

you can use the negative from another molex so that the positive and negative leads are further away. also i hear that you sohuld let these sit for a day or tow to let the capacitators drain off after removing htem from a comoputer. i think its a load of bs though since they will jsut be charged up again the instant you connect it ot charge from.

Also, what would possibly happen if you shortened the 12v and the ground? The fuse would go off or something?
Most computer PSU’s switch off temporarily (until you give them a hard power on/off reboot) when they encounter a short-cut on one of thei wires. So yeah, they’re great and protected!
I made one a few days ago, and I’ve cut all the wires and left only one wire per every different voltage supply. Then I’ve drilled holes in my housing and added those female connectors, so you just plug in your wires.. I don’t know the exact name =/ . I accidentally managed to short-cut 3.3V, 5V and 12C with the ground while screwing the connectors to the housing, and the whole thing just stopped working, like you said it would

could i bundle a couple yellow wires together and bundle a couple of black wires together, and then plug all of those into my amp? and if i can, what difference would that make. Also, haha, if i did want to clean up all those un-used wires by cutting them, what would be the best/safest way to cut them all short. thanks and nice vid btw

A quick question for you, as my last dose of freshman physics was a _long_ time ago: for an ATX power supply, is there any benefit to terminating multiple 12V leads to a single terminal? Would this increase the amperage? I’m not sure if the PSU’s rating stamp means that the total amps across all 12V rails is whatever the rating is or if that number is for each individual rail. I’m using an iCharger 106B+.

The only advantage would be that the wires combined together would allow more current to go through wire. Putting wires in parallel like this in essence create a larger wire.

Thanks for your reply. I actually dug out my physics book and did some reading. Since then I’ve bundled 6 +12V and 6 ground wires to solid banana terminals mounted to the housing. I also put some load on the +5V rail (via 10Ω 10W resistor) to balance out the +12V rail. Voltage on the +12 side can be adjusted slightly with different resistor series. Works with my iCharger 106B+ flawlessly.

nice video I was told you need to put a 10w resistor on it so it has a small load to get better regulation.did you find you dont need one
