Computer viruses are small pieces of software that spread from computer to computer, like a human “virus” or infection. They can corrupt data, delete files, start e-mail programs to spread themselves to your contacts or even wipe out an entire hard disk.

The term “computer virus” is not a catch-all for everything bad that can happen to your computer, and does not even include all the “malware” that can enter your system from the Internet. Such other troublemakers as Trojan horses, worms and spyware are different animals entirely, although some anti-virus programs and procedures may work against them, too. This article is specifically addressed to viruses.

A compute virus is most commonly (and easily) spread by e-mail attachments and IM (Instant Messaging) chat messages. It is a simple and wise rule not to open unexpected e-mail attachments, but viruses also come disguised as images, audio or video files, applications (.exe files) and electronic greeting cards. Indiscriminate downloading from the Internet can also spread viruses, and they are often hiding in pirated programs and other “swappable” files.

Symptoms of computer viruses

Whether you work on a Windows PC, a Macintosh or a Linux computer, you should always have an up-to-date antivirus program installed. Although Macs are somewhat less vulnerable because of their smaller market share, it is no longer true (if it ever was) that they are immune or not subject to virus attack.

The following indicators of virus infection can occur on most any operating system (OS), although the different interfaces and terms involved may differ somewhat. Apply the symptom description to your specific OS if it is written in terms for another OS.

Symptoms of computer viruses:

– You get strange sounds or music from your speakers unexpectedly, with volume controls often disabled.

– Programs disappear although you did not intentionally remove any. Conversely, programs appear although you did not install them.

– The computer crashes every few minutes. You may get the “blue screen of death” in Windows or a spinning beachball with the Mac before these occurrences.

– The computer runs slow, or slower than normal. It may take longer to boot up, longer to open folder/directories, longer to execute simple functions and so forth.

– The computer freezes, or “locks up” often. You may have to do an increasing number of Control-Alt-Delete commands (or, on the Mac, Force Quit commands).

– New antivirus programs cannot be installed, or when installed will not run.

– Strange and/or new icons appear on your desktop, or your OS advises you that the icons are not associated with any installed software.

– The computer shuts down, then restarts on its own.

– Applications installed on the computer do not work as they once did, or not at all.

– Disks or disk drives cannot be “read” by the OS.

– You cannot print, fax or e-mail items normally.

– You get a series of error messages, some of which may be indecipherable even to experts.

– Your screen is home to distorted menus and unreadable dialog boxes.

– You encounter double extensions on recently opened attachments, such as .pdf, .jpg, .vbs, .exe or .gif added to another, different extension.

– You discover that you antivirus program is disabled without your having done it. Sometimes the antivirus program will not restart and cannot even be reinstalled.

These are all common indicators of a virus infection, although they may be due to single or multiple hardware or software issues wholly unrelated to viruses. This is what makes troubleshooting so difficult at times. The proliferation of other “malicious software” in the form of Trojan horses, worms, etc., also compounds the problem, particularly for users who are not especially technically-oriented.

PC user can avail themselves of many tools, even free ones, to counter these infections. You should run the Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool and maintain a clean, current installation of industry-standard antivirus software. It is best to have more than one program, too. The ClamXAV and other freebies are available for the Mac, AVG Free is available for PCs, and Linux users, who are typically more advanced computer users, have access to a number of open source solutions.

You may discover that, after running removal and troubleshooting utilities, your problems persist. At least you will have eliminated viruses as a cause of the problem, and you can then move on to dealing with the other malware mentioned above, as well as determining if you have some hardware problems. If viruses are not the problem, there are other candidates, but it still true that most low-level problems are the result of these nasty little pieces of code. Now you know what to do!

If you believe what you hear in the media, there are an awful lot of viruses going around. No, I’m not talking about the make-you-sick kind of virus, though they get plenty of airtime, too. I’m talking about the kind of virus that enters via your internet connection rather than your nasal passages.

What the mainstream media often don’t tell you–at least, in most radio and television newscasts and in the crucial headlines and opening paragraphs of newspaper articles– is that many of these “viruses” are not viruses at all.

What Computer Viruses Really Are

The main reason the mainstream media always are in alarm over viruses is that they tend to call any malicious computer program a virus. In reality, there are at least eleven distinct types of malicious software, or malware, commonly affecting computers today. The most common of these are worms, Trojans, and spyware.

So, what’s the difference between computer viruses and the other types of malware? The difference is that computer viruses are just about the only ones that regularly shut down computers and cause other obvious damage. The most common of the other kinds of malware–worms, Trojans, and spyware–are usually only detectable with a special scan.

The Real Danger of Computer Viruses

If the other types of malware are so unobtrusive that they can only be detected with a special scan, then what’s to worry about? For starters, these programs are called malicious for a reason: they are designed to cause some kind of damage, if not to your computer, then to someone else’s.

Worms are most famously used to damage, destroy, or disrupt other computer networks than the one on which the host computer is located. For instance, worms have been used by website owners to shut down rival websites by sending overwhelming numbers of requests to the computer that hosts that website. Worms have also been used to send out viruses to other computers, often without infecting the host machine–after all, what would it benefit the worm to shut down its host computer?

Trojans, in turn, are often used to insert worms and other malware on your computer, even if the Trojan itself does no damage.

But even if you don’t care what happens to anyone else, you should still be concerned about one kind of malware: spyware, a kind of malware that, true to its name, collects data from your computer and sends it back to a remote host.

Most spyware is only interested in monitoring your internet usage so it can tell other programs, called adware, what advertising to popup on your computer. However, there are criminal spyware programs that steal financial data, or perform a thorough identity theft. Don’t think you have personal or financial data on your computer? Some spyware programs contain a keylogger, which is a program that copies whatever you type, usually in order to snatch passwords. Even if you keep no financial information on your computer, if you ever buy anything over the web, the keylogger would allow its owner to buy stuff using the same information you typed in to buy stuff yourself.

Why Blame the Media?

Given the danger of all these different types of malware, isn’t it a good thing that the mass media are becoming hysterical about it? And can’t they be forgiven the sloppy reporting of calling Trojans, worms, spyware, and other malware “viruses”?

No, no, no.

This is a classic case of bad reporting doing more damage than no reporting at all. In this case, the damage bad reporting has done is to promote a common myth that goes something like this: “The only malicious software is a virus. Viruses damage your computer. Therefore, if my computer is working OK, my computer has no malicious software. I only need to scan my computer for problems when there is a sign of problems.”

Thanks to this myth, many people complacently let their antivirus software go months out of date, not wanting to be bothered with scheduling an automatic update. Just as bad, many people don’t have any extra software to combat the other types of malware that may not be covered by antivirus software.

In fact, it’s not uncommon for people who have found malware on their computers after a scan to say, “but I never had malware on my computer before!” But how would they have known if they had never scanned!

Until the biggest mainstream media–and especially television–start educating the public about the need to have their computers automatically scanned at least daily, the world will continue to have major, drawn-out problems with malware that could have been wiped out as soon as soon as the anti-malware software makers discovered it.

And until that day, the mainstream media will have many more opportunities to run hysterical stories about “viruses,” thereby forcing them to sell more newspapers and broadcast to even larger audiences of people who suck at the information trough yet somehow never become full.

How to use Google to keep your computer error free.

What do you do when an error message pops up on your screen?

This will copy an image of the error message to your clipboard. Now you can open your paint program by clicking on your Start button > Programs > Accessories > Paint. I advise making a folder on your hard drive and naming it something like Error Messages. Save a copy on any error messages you get into this folder for future reference.

Type the exact error message and click on the Search Button. Now comes the hard part. You will need to read the summaries of each link to find the one that closely matches your issue. Click on that link and check out that web site to see if it talks about your error message. Most of the time you will find you are at a forum site, with other people asking the same question. You can then see if anyone has answered the question on how to fix the error. You may have to look a while find the right answer, but I have found over the years this is your best resource for computer help.
