I got a motherboard with a Pentium D 945 3.4, the board is intel and has 4 sata drive connectors. I got an 80gb eide hd, and an old case with a 250w power supply with no 12v cpu connector, I had to go out and buy one at frys for .99.

Anyways, I’m able to use the computer for a while once turned on but once I restart the system doesnt detect a hard disk and the hard disk sounds like it turns on and off and knocks. I also tried an old 10 gb hard drive I had lying around and the same thing. I’m pretty sure its the weak power supply, what do you guys think.

I’m not keeping the system or anything, I wanted to give it to my nephew.
drives are good to begin, they could be going bad i guess due to psu.
no graphics card, integrated graphics
It was the power supply, got a new one and the computer works perfect, hard drives are good.

The case I’m considering doesn’t come w/a power supply so I need to determine what I really need. Is there a guideline somewhere for this? I’ve found a list that breaks down watts per component but its on the vague side. I’d read that there should be a label stating actual usage on each part but either I don’t see the info or I have no idea what it means.
I’m sure its better to have more power than not enough, but can you have too much?

– 19" Widescreen LCD monitor – either Samsung or LG?

**I only have 1 slot for my graphics card & I’m undecided.
